Define the condition the machine needs to know.

A sensor should answer a clear process or machine question. Is a part present? Has an actuator reached its position? Is the pressure, temperature, level or flow within the required range? MCT Nexus reviews the measurement or detection requirement and its role in the operating sequence before defining the controls interface.

Device suitability depends on the target, environment, range, installation and required response. The scope may include proximity or photoelectric detection, analog instruments, process feedback or an interface to a specialist measurement device. The application determines the appropriate selection and verification.

Carry the signal through the complete engineering package.

Electrical and I/O information

Identify power, signal type, connection, channel and device description in the electrical drawings and I/O list. Field wiring and device identification should help the installer connect the intended instrument to the intended controller input.

Scaling and diagnostics

For measured values, define engineering units, useful range, scaling and the response to invalid or unavailable signals. PLC logic and HMI displays must interpret the value consistently. A displayed number without its units or device status can be misleading.

Connected device interfaces

Where supported by the selected hardware, interfaces such as IO-Link can be considered for device data and configuration. Protocol, master-device compatibility and the information actually available from the instrument are confirmed for the project. This is an interface option, not a claim that every sensor provides the same features.

Use feedback in the sequence and acceptance plan.

The PLC/HMI scope defines how a signal permits an operation, detects a fault or verifies a process step. Alarm limits and operating setpoints need an approved engineering basis. Monitoring a condition does not automatically make a device suitable for a protective function or a quality measurement.

Checkout should confirm device identity, wiring, signal interpretation and the response to the relevant operating conditions. Calibration or metrology requirements, where applicable, need a separately defined method and responsibility. Test records should distinguish actual instrument checks from simulated PLC values.
