Define the quality decision first.

An inspection station needs a clear answer to a specific production question. Is the part present, oriented correctly, assembled completely or within a measured acceptance range? MCT Nexus develops the controls and equipment integration scope around that decision. The customer’s quality requirements and the measurement method establish what the system must demonstrate.

Inspection may use discrete sensors, vision, measurement devices or a dedicated test instrument. Leak and electrical testing require suitable test equipment and an application-specific method. MCT Nexus does not assume that a generic sensor or software check can replace the required measurement capability.

Connect the device, the result and the part.

Trigger and identification

Define how a part is located, identified and presented for the check. Establish the condition that triggers inspection and how the machine knows the result belongs to that cycle. A result remaining from a previous part must not be mistaken for a new measurement.

Pass, fail and invalid results

The control sequence should distinguish a measured failure from an unavailable or invalid result. Timeouts, device faults and communication errors need defined dispositions. Some applications require a controlled reject path, operator review or a retest procedure; the project specification should make that choice explicit.

Production records

Where records are needed, define the part identifier, measured values, units, limits, recipe, timestamp and result. Agree on where the data is stored and how retention is managed. Traceability engineering connects these records with part movement and production-system interfaces.

Develop the station around the measurement conditions.

Fixturing, part presentation, environment and process variation can affect the usefulness of a measurement. Vision applications need a review of the actual parts, lighting, views and defect conditions. Test instruments need the correct range, interface and application method. Feasibility trials may be required before an automated station is committed.

The PLC/HMI should expose equipment status, the current result and actionable faults. Access to test limits and recipes needs an agreed control process. The integration scope identifies who owns the measurement settings and the approval of acceptance criteria.

Part handling is also part of quality control. A rejected item must remain associated with its result until the agreed disposition is complete. A manual removal, bypass or rework loop can break that association unless its behavior is defined. Coordinate the station with material handling and upstream/downstream equipment.

Verify the decision with representative evidence.

A useful test plan includes acceptable parts, known failures and expected variation. Agree on the reference method and the responsibility for approving the sample set. Record the conditions under which the station was checked, its limitations and the open items requiring further work. Production capability claims require evidence appropriate to the application.

FAT addresses the available equipment and samples; site acceptance checks the installed environment and production interfaces. Documentation should identify the released settings, software versions, device configurations and procedures for change control. MCT Nexus can include commissioning and maintenance training in the defined scope.

What information is needed for an inquiry?

Provide the quality characteristic, part variants, required decision, existing measurement method, sample availability and intended production rate. Include how failed or uncertain parts should be handled and whether results need to be retained. Those requirements determine the sensing, tooling, controls and data scope.

Can inspection be added to an existing machine?

Potentially. The available space, part presentation, cycle, control interfaces and reject process must be reviewed. A separate inspection device still needs coordinated triggering, result handling and verification within the machine sequence.
