Production tracking that connects part identification, recipe selection, process results and equipment interfaces to the physical manufacturing sequence.
Keep the identity connected to the actual part.
A barcode or RFID read is a starting point for traceability. The machine must preserve the relationship between that identity and the item being processed as it moves, waits, changes stations or is removed. MCT Nexus defines the controls and integration scope around that physical sequence.
The requirements should state what needs to be known: the product type, serial number, process history, selected recipe, inspection result or destination. Not every project needs every data field. Begin with the production and quality decisions the information is intended to support.
Define the information contract.
Identification and validation
Agree on identifier format, read location, expected uniqueness and the response to a missing or invalid read. A reader can return data successfully while the value is unsuitable for the production task. Define how the machine verifies that an identifier is valid for the selected operation.
Recipes and process results
Specify which information selects a recipe and how that selection is confirmed at the machine. Where measurements or pass/fail results are recorded, associate them with the right part and cycle. Include units, timestamp, station identity and the relevant program or recipe revision where required.
Systems and ownership
Define whether the PLC, local application, database or plant production system owns each item of information. The scope should identify server administration, network access, storage and retention responsibilities. MCT Nexus can coordinate machine-side interfaces with the customer’s IT/OT and software teams.
Design for production exceptions.
A robust specification addresses duplicate identifiers, rework, retest, manual removal and communication loss. Decide whether the equipment can continue without a data destination, must hold the part or needs an authorized exception procedure. Those choices depend on the production and quality requirements; they should not be left to an undocumented software default.
Buffering and recovery require particular care. If records are stored temporarily, define how they are reconciled after reconnection and how duplicates or missing records are identified. A timestamp does not replace a reliable cycle or part identity. The verification plan should test the expected interruptions and confirm the agreed recovery behavior.
Coordinate conveyor controls, inspection and process stations so the logical record matches the physical path. An operator action at one station may affect the traceability state elsewhere in the line.
Give operators useful information and a controlled workflow.
The HMI can show the current identity, selected product, active result and the condition preventing release. Error messages should distinguish a reader issue, an invalid identifier, an unavailable system and a failed process result. Authorized correction or rework procedures need to be defined and documented.
Testing should follow representative parts through the entire scoped path, including exceptions. Confirm that the record can be retrieved and interpreted by the team that uses it. The handover should include interface definitions, configuration records, software files within scope and the ownership of ongoing system administration.
What should an inquiry include?
Provide the current part flow, identifier examples, desired production records, reader or RFID hardware if selected, and the systems that must exchange information. Include the behavior required during outages, rework and manual handling. MCT Nexus will define the machine-side automation and any separately required software or database scope.
Is traceability included with every machine?
No. The level of identification and retained history is a project requirement. A simple part verification task and a system that retains manufacturing history require different hardware, software, testing and support arrangements.
