Define who communicates with what.
MCT Nexus reviews the control devices, information flow and equipment interfaces needed for a machine or production system. The network scope should identify devices, addresses, connection paths, protocol requirements and ownership of each plant interface. A drawing of cables is useful, but the application also needs a clear description of the information exchanged.
Protocol selection is based on the installed or selected hardware. EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus TCP and device interfaces such as IO-Link may arise in the review; specific platform and protocol support is confirmed against the project rather than assumed from this list.
Separate connectivity from machine behavior.
Physical and device configuration
Review device identities, cabling, switch arrangement and the configuration information needed to maintain the system. Managed switches may support the agreed diagnostics and network design, but the appropriate arrangement depends on the equipment and the plant’s requirements.
Equipment handshakes
Define commands, status, acknowledgments, faults and timing between machines. A working network connection does not prove that the application is interpreting the information correctly. The controls engineering scope establishes the operating contract between systems.
Plant IT/OT interfaces
Coordinate addresses, segmentation, remote access and administration with the customer’s responsible team. Remote support, where appropriate, must use an approved access method. MCT Nexus does not create an unmanaged internet connection to production equipment as a default service arrangement.
Diagnose faults and preserve the configuration.
Network investigations should distinguish a device outage, physical connection problem, configuration issue and application-level timeout. Record the observed condition and the equipment affected before changing settings. Coordinate changes with the plant because a local machine adjustment can affect shared infrastructure or adjacent systems.
Commissioning should verify the intended data exchange and the agreed response to unavailable devices. Test expected recovery behavior and identify any dependencies on external systems. Traceability applications also need a defined response when a data destination is unavailable.
The handover should include a network diagram, device list, relevant configuration records and interface ownership. Sensitive access information belongs in the customer’s approved secure process. For an inquiry, send the equipment list, network drawing if available, symptoms or required interfaces, and the controls platforms involved. MCT Nexus will define the machine-side engineering scope with the plant’s IT/OT team.
