Match the control approach to the required movement.

MCT Nexus reviews what the axis or driven equipment must do before defining the controls interface. Continuous speed control, indexed positioning and coordinated motion have different requirements. The mechanical arrangement, load, travel, duty, feedback and stopping behavior affect the engineering scope.

Motor and drive selection must be evaluated for the actual application. An existing drive replacement also requires a review of electrical compatibility, motor information, feedback, commands and the machine functions that depend on it.

Coordinate the drive with the machine.

VFD and motor control

Define start/stop behavior, speed commands, feedback, permissives and fault handling. The electrical package should identify supply, protection, motor connections and the interface to the controller. Parameters and configuration records need to correspond to the delivered equipment.

Servo and positioning systems

Review travel limits, referencing, position feedback, motion profiles and the conditions that permit movement. Homing or reference recovery is part of the operating requirement. The controls sequence must account for interrupted movement and the state of the connected mechanism.

Coordinated motion

Where axes or machines must work together, define synchronization requirements, ownership of commands and expected behavior if one element becomes unavailable. Feasibility and platform suitability are reviewed before committing to the implementation.

Verify movement and document the configuration.

The PLC/HMI program should expose the relevant status, commands, faults and maintenance information. Electrical design and network interfaces connect the hardware with the software. Changes to speed, movement or stopping require review of the machine’s protective design and operating procedures.

Commissioning should verify the agreed range of operation, feedback, limits, faults and restart behavior under controlled conditions. The test scope and qualified personnel must be appropriate to the equipment. Preserve the released drive parameters and software configuration in the handover package.

For a motion inquiry, provide the mechanism, motor/drive information if existing, required motion, load information, controls platform and operating constraints. Identify whether the project is new equipment, a drive replacement or a change to the machine sequence.
