The commissioning and FAT scope should identify the requirements to be checked, the available equipment and the people responsible for acceptance. Define utilities, sample parts, process materials, connected machines and any interfaces that will be simulated. A test can only demonstrate behavior under the conditions actually provided.
Start with the agreed electrical verification and device identification. I/O checkout confirms the relationship between field devices, wiring, controller information and software descriptions. Device-level tests then establish commands, feedback and expected responses before the complete sequence is exercised.
Functional testing can cover modes, normal cycles, permissives, alarms, recipes, communications and recovery. Protective functions require the specific verification and validation activities established for the machine. An ordinary cycle test is not a substitute for those activities.
A useful test record identifies the requirement, setup, expected response, observed result and disposition. Open items should have an owner and a planned resolution. Distinguish a failed requirement from an item that could not be tested because the necessary part, utility or interface was unavailable.
Site commissioning addresses the installed utilities, field connections, production interfaces and operating conditions. The acceptance plan should state which checks are repeated at site and which additional production checks are required. Startup support and ongoing production support are separately defined activities.
