Define the electrical and environmental requirements

A control panel is part of a machine or production system. Before laying out components, MCT Nexus reviews the supply, connected loads, control voltage, I/O, drives, interfaces and enclosure environment. Available space, cable entry, heat, contamination, maintenance access and the customer’s component standards affect the design. Required markings, approvals and inspection responsibilities must be established in the scope.

The quotation should distinguish a complete design-and-build package from build-to-print assembly. In a design-and-build project, the electrical architecture and drawings are developed as part of the work. In a build-to-print project, the customer supplies an approved design and defines how substitutions, drawing discrepancies and revision changes will be resolved.

Develop the electrical package

The schematic design records power distribution, control circuits, protective devices, terminal connections, field wiring and the interfaces to the machine. Component selection may include PLC hardware, power supplies, relays, contactors, motor controls, drives, terminals, network devices and protective components. Ratings and suitability are evaluated for the actual application; a familiar part number is not automatically suitable for every panel.

The panel layout coordinates component arrangement, wire routing, service clearances and cable entry. Heat-producing devices and the enclosure environment influence thermal management. The bill of materials identifies the intended components and supports purchasing, assembly and future maintenance. Changes need revision control so the drawing set, physical build and parts list remain aligned.

Build for understandable wiring and maintenance

During panel assembly and wiring, device identification, wire labels and terminal references should agree with the electrical package. Field connections need a clear destination and sufficient documentation for installation. The build review considers access to serviceable items and whether an installer can identify the relevant connection without tracing an undocumented circuit.

The customer’s required construction practices and applicable project standards are reviewed before fabrication. MCT Nexus does not represent itself on this website as a UL-listed panel shop. If a listing, certification, third-party inspection or specific compliance deliverable is required, identify it during the inquiry so the delivery arrangement can be confirmed before commitment.

Test the agreed functions

Panel checkout can include a drawing-to-build inspection, device identification, connection verification and defined functional checks. Any energized testing requires an appropriate plan and qualified personnel. PLC I/O, drive interfaces and communications may be checked separately from the complete machine sequence; the scope should make that boundary clear.

Panel testing cannot by itself verify every aspect of a machine. Field wiring, actuators, guarding, process conditions and equipment interfaces may only be available during integration. The commissioning and FAT plan identifies where each requirement will be checked and how open items will be tracked through completion.

Deliver the information needed after installation

  • Issued electrical schematics and panel layout with revision identification.
  • Component bill of materials and agreed device configuration records.
  • Terminal, cable and field connection information within the design scope.
  • Test records and the status of any customer-approved exceptions.
  • PLC and HMI files when programming is included in the project.

What should you send for a control panel quote?

Provide the machine function, electrical supply, connected loads, I/O list if available, enclosure environment and preferred controls platform. Include required standards, approved drawings for build-to-print work, quantity, installation location and target delivery date. Can the panel be supplied with programming?

Yes, PLC and HMI programming can be defined alongside panel design and build. The scope must identify the machine sequence, interfaces, software acceptance checks and whether on-machine commissioning is included. A panel-only delivery and a fully integrated machine controls package require different verification activities.
